Grade 6 Literacy

Fusun Tufekci

Hello All,

I would like to welcome our new students and parents to our wonderful school and I hope that you have all enjoyed your experiences so far. I would like to also welcome back existing students and parents to the beginning of what will be a fantastic 2017.

In Literacy this year students will not only work hard, but also have lots of fun. We will be having an intercampus debating competition later on in the year and three students will be chosen to represent the school and compete in the competition.

In order to better develop their literacy skills students are expected to read daily for at least half an hour. Studies have proven that 30 minutes of reading every day greatly increase one's ability to ability to read, write, speak and spell. This is why it is very important that students read every night; hence why we have implemented the DEAR Program into our school. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read. This program encourages students to read everyday and ensures that they get at least fifteen minutes of reading daily.

The Grade Six weekly homework schedule require students to complete their Reading Eggs tasks, spelling activity, daily reading, grammar and writing tasks, (only when not completed in class) and BTN homework.

During the term, students are learning how to write letters, use descriptive and figurative language in both verbal and written form, learn various reading strategies, develop our existing spelling, punctuation and grammar skills; as well as looking deeper into world news via the ABC News hosted BTN program.

The Grade Sixes also take part in the Buddy Program; where they are assigned a buddy from the foundation classes and help the little ones settle into school. The aim of the program is for both parties to learn how to form new relationships, become more socially responsible and further develop their caring and nurturing skills.

Let’s take a look at what the students have done so far:
